IT'S A Challenge!

Leaving for my cruise this week, I will be sketching and doodling parts of my trip.  A travel journal in pictures, so to speak.  While I'm gone, I thought this would be a great time for all of you to make up some new doodles of your own!  Remember, think "out of the box".  Let things you see inspire you.  It may be something in nature, a piece of art, a story you heard, etc.
Then, send me a photo via email by March 1st and you could win a new Strathmore sketchbook!
A great way to try out working on beige paper, a new journal that Strathmore is making, in addition to their new gray papered ones.  Value 12.00        khofferth@me.com
                                              Now DOODLE AWAY!

Just off the Easel!

Most men would come home with roses and chocolates, but my man brought me a new tabletop easel for Valentines Day!  Wow, does this make the biggest  difference in my posture.  Its easy to sit for awhile in any chair and end up being stiff and sore when you get up.  The easel allows me to sit straight up and have it to the edge of the table with no excessive reaching. My back is better supported.  It has its own drawer for all my goody pens and folds up easily for on the go!  I did this butterfly last night watching my favorite "chick" channel, PiXL.  I have plans for this Butterfly - it will be cut out and mounted on black for framing.   Below is the finished sample from last weeks class.  I use these templates so I can demonstrate using Copic markers, tangling, and colored pencil with copics.

Tangled Up!

I remember we used to make Isochohedron Balls when I was younger out of old Christmas Cards.  I have done this with children also.  It's  cutting out those circles but the end effect is worth it.  You can find out how to make these on Pinterest.  I especially like this one that has had the circles tangled!

These would be great to make for Christmas ornaments using circles in a smaller size.

Have you been tangling lately?  Here's a beautiful tile that is shown cut then spaced on background paper to give the look of a border.  So easy to make a beautiful card or to frame!

Tangle Fever.......

I love seeing how others use their tangles to spread the joy!  Here are a couple of ideas.

Strips of tangled paper put together with a brad makes a great bow for a package!   ....Or try painting found rocks white and tangle on them.

Rocks tangled by Malena Valcarcel.

50 Shades of Gray!

I've been experimenting with Micron Black and Gelly Roll White pens on my gray sketchbook.  I love the effect of the shading.  I use the white gel pen to add highlights where the tangle highlight normally would have been left.    I normally shade in "deep" areas, on both sides which leaves a "highlight" or "shiny" look to the curves.  A white gel pen can highlight those areas even more by accenting that area.  For some awesome new tangles, check out Ellen Wolters on YouTube!

Here's some more examples of tangle with white highlights...  I think it adds a nice touch.

This I called the "Cat's Meow!"
I hope you enjoy these new techniques as much as I do.  Try your tangles with different pens, inks, and on different colored papers.  I think you'll be surprised!

New products!

I am a sucker for any kind of new pens, papers, and anything to draw on.   I found a fun Japanese site www.jetpens.com with loads of new items for tanglers!
I love this pen case for on-the-go.  Stick in your purse and set up fast.  The top folds back so you have a stand up case!  This one sells for only $9.00

Want to draw your own new tangles?  Try a small notebook with graph paper.  Take it on the go to copy patterns you see all around!
